On Wednesday, April 27, 2016, Rev. Peggy Ogden-Howe and Sue Sidney, a United Methodist Women’s leader, accompanied Outreach & Engagement Specialist, Rev. Sam Brannon, to the Region G water-planning meeting in Waco, Texas. This Water Captains“field trip” was an opportunity for members of the faith community to participate in the regional water planning process. The meeting was full of reports from various water conservation districts, ground water management areas, and other presenters who brought news from water planners statewide.
Texas’ grassroots approach to water planning encourages participation from citizens. Each meeting has a legislated opportunity for public comment, both written and voiced, that will go on the permanent public record, providing a great way for members of the public to express their ideas, priorities, and concerns. During the Region G meeting, Rev. Howe asked whether the Texas Water Development Board took part in or encouraged Texans to take part in the UN’s annual World Water Day, which is observed on March 22nd. At the time, no one seemed to know the answer, but her question led to a follow-up conversation after the meeting had ended.
It is important for members of the faith community to attend these meetings, because it is only through our presence and participation that we can offer feedback to state leaders about how the water planning process can be improved.
